Physio During Pregnancy

Having a physiotherapist on your team during pregnancy is essential! It’s a great touch point to have throughout your journey and allows you to get on top of aches and pains early or even prevent them from coming on all together.

It also allows you to remain comfortable whilst your baby is growing and we can give individualised advice regarding self-management tips for home, exercise modifications or new things to try (like a prenatal hydrotherapy class for example!) Keep reading to find out more about how we can help you on your pregnancy journey.

What do we treat?

    Low Back Pain & Sciatica

Potentially the most common pregnancy related condition we treat. This can come on as early as the first trimester as there are already changes happening in your body!

    Hip Pain & Bursitis

This often occurs during pregnancy as you’re now sleeping on your side a lot! We release the tight muscles and give you tips to avoid aggravating your hips, whilst adding basic strengthening exercises to help long term!

  • Neck Pain & Headaches

Neck pain and headaches are particularly common in the last trimester as your posture changes! We can help with massage, joint mobilisations, trigger point therapy and cupping to reduce your pain.

    Upper Back & Rib Pain

Stiffness and pain in your upper back and ribs often comes on in the last trimester, as exercise becomes harder and you have increasingly less room as your baby grows. We can help keep you comfortable and give you simple stretches for home to ease your discomfort.

How does physio work during pregnancy?

  • Before we start, we will often ask some questions about your pregnancy journey so far, your due date, whether you know the gender, what model of care you have chosen and whether there have been any complications so far that we need to be aware of!

  • Next we will do some basic testing to determine what is causing your pain. This may include simple range of movement exercises, standing on one leg or demonstrating activities that usually cause you pain.

  • We use specialised pregnancy pillows to allow you to safely lie on your tummy and receive treatment!

  • At the end, we will email you a treatment plan, which highlights all of the important things we chatted about during our session (so you don’t have to remember anything we say!).

We also offer to write a letter to your OB or midwife and keep them in the loop! This is completely optional!
